This odd outcome was possible because of Clevelands commodious but otiose popular margins in the Democratic south-central while nearly losing the large industrial states of the North.

In none of these contests was the victors right to reign over seriously challenged. But if totally popular votes are counted, the loser in a track as close as those of 1960, 1968 and 1976 might well guide a recount.
